Send money home – it’s easier than you think!

A Western union card, some coins from the USA, and a wallet

Many refugees and immigrant wish to help their families. Many send money home to help financially. Learn about some ways that you can safely send money to other countries.

Refugees and immigrants who come to the USA to start a new life often have family members back in their home country. Many continue to take the responsibility of supporting their families in their home countries. Their family might be in difficult living conditions and need financial help. America is the land of opportunities where refugees receive help from resettlement organizations and their host communities. This helps them to find jobs. They can start making money and can help their families.

It is important for refugees in America to find easy and cheap ways to send money home to their families. It is also important that they search carefully for safe and reliable ways to send money.

They should avoid losing their money or paying too much for the process of sending money home.

There are a number of ways to send money home that I have found easy and safe. One of the cheapest and fastest ways  is the online money transfer called “wiring money.” It is simply sending money from a bank account in the USA to a bank account overseas. The recipient of the money must have a bank account in the country they live in.

This process can be hard for some refugees and immigrants. In their early years in the USA, people may not have enough knowledge of how to use online banking.

The other good method to send money home is through Western Union.

You can use cash, a debit card, or credit card to send money this way. All you need to do is find a Western Union branch where you live and go there to do the transaction. There is a machine there that you can easily use. You can ask for help to do that. This is a very fast service and their fees are generally not expensive. Also, Western Union has branches in more than 200 countries around the world. The recipient can receive the money in the form of cash from the Western Union branch in the country they live in.

The recipient will need to present one or two forms of ID to the Western Union branch.

It is important to note that you give the exact same name of the recipient. It must be exactly as it appears on the recipient’s ID regardless of the language. All the first, middle, and last names must be entered.  I have seen refugees facing issues in the process because they didn’t put the exact name of the recipient. When you send money home through Western Union, you will get a receipt with a tracking number.

You must send the tracking number to the recipient so that they can receive the money.

It is important that you ask a lot of questions before you decide to send money home in order to avoid mistakes that can happen with hasty decisions. Once you get all the information about the process, then you can easily send money home to help your family.
