Paying for college

College can be very expensive. Some students in the USA get into debt if they are not careful. However, there are many options for paying for college. Learn the different ways you can pay for your education.

Many students need assistance when paying for college

Student loans

Some students pay for college with loans, either from the government or private loans. To apply for a loan from the government, you have to complete the FAFSA, which is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. When you apply for loans from the government, you have to repay them with interest. This means you borrow money from the government and have to return it with extra money added. Private loans can sometimes have very high interest rates. Before you decide to take student loans, you should talk to a school counselor or someone who can help you and make sure you understand the loans.

FAFSA

This is the official government website for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. For many students, this is the first place they look when paying for college. Students from low-income families can receive grants or scholarships to help them pay for school. Completing the FAFSA is very complicated and confusing for American families as well as refugee families.

Part-time work

Some students pay for college by going to school part-time and working part-time. Sometimes, schools will give students grants that allow them to work on campus and get paid from Federal Work Study funds. You can also find a part-time job that has flexible hours so that you can attend college. However, it can be very hard to go to college while you are working, especially if you have a family. When thinking about paying for college, think about this option after applying for scholarships and through FAFSA.

Scholarships
