How to find a job
How to find a job – where to find job openings
Here are four ways you can look for jobs:
• Tell your friends that you are looking for a job
Many jobs are found through people you know. For example, a friend hears about a job as a cook at a restaurant. She knows you like to cook and you are looking for a job so she tells you to apply. Having friends and other people you know who can help you get a job is called having a network. A larger network of friends is better than a small one.
It is important you try to make friends with people from your home country and with other Americans. These friends can help you find a job. You should tell everyone you know you are looking for a job. For example, you can ask your family mentor, your neighbors, your friends, and people at your church or mosque if they know of any job openings.
Tell people you know that you are looking for work and what kind of work you are looking for.
• Look at businesses in your neighborhood
You can walk around your neighborhood and look for signs in the windows of the businesses near you that say “Help wanted.” This means the business is hiring employees.
• Sign up at an employment office
Many cities have employment offices that help you search for work. Your resettlement agency probably also will help you look for a job. If they already helped you find your first job, you can tell them you are looking for a new job and they may be able to help you again.
• Search online
Today, most jobs are posted online. Some of the advantages of looking online for work are that you can look specifically for the kind of work you are interested in, with the location and hours you want. If you don’t have a computer, you can use the computer at the public library for free to look for jobs.
Looking online for work can be difficult for people new to using computers. Remember that no one is born knowing how to use a computer, that everyone had to learn, and that you can learn, too. With practice, it will become more familiar to you. There are evening classes libraries, schools and employment centers in many communities to teach people how to use computers in their job search. Search the RCO’s database for classes in your city.
Here are some websites you can use to search for jobs online:

Understanding a job description
As you look at jobs online, you will need to understand the job descriptions.
To know if you are a good fit for the job, you will want to find the qualifications for the job.
Look for key words such as minimum, must be, must have, must be able to, needed, necessary, required, requirements, and at least to find what skills, experience and education are needed to get the job.
It is very important that you have a good understanding of the qualifications for the job and that you have the qualifications before applying. If you can show that you understand and have the qualifications for the position, you will have a good chance to get an interview and get the job.
