How PDX Global Eats makes a difference:

The Refugee Center Online (RCO) is a national nonprofit headquartered right here in Portland. 100% of the proceeds from PDX Global Eats support our free information and education resources for immigrants and refugees.

In 2018, over half a million people visited RCO’s website to access accurate information and resources to help them build new lives in the US.

This year, PDX Global Eats will raise money to support RCO’s work to improve the quality and accessibility of our services for newcomers.

We at RCO know that education opens doors to opportunity. For many newcomers, disrupted education and a lack of high school diploma can be a major barrier in the US. In 2018, our online GED prep program had over 20,000 actively engaged learners and in 2019, with your support, we will launch the course in app format to reach more people than ever before.

“I took the Refugee Center GED review to help me pass the GED exam in California. I passed my GED exam for all subjects on the first attempts. I was able to enroll in a Cardiac Monitor technician course. Now I can apply for college courses and apply for better jobs that offer good benefits.” – Nick Esquibel, RCO GED Prep student

Additional information

Performance from Belise

We are excited to kick off PDX Global Eats 2019 with a special performance from Belise Nishimwe, a 17-year-old poet and former refugee who was recently featured in the Oregonian for making the US competition. Read her story here: From refugee camp to the big stage: Teen poet from Portland headed to U.S. competition.

Life story from one of the chefs

One of the chefs is going to share their life story and how Portland has become their home. In addition, they are going to share about their experience of being a chef and what it means to them.

Updates from the RCO

We will have updates on exciting projects RCO is currently working on and how we are using the power of technology to help refugees and immigrants build new lives. Did you know that the RCO just launched an app called FindHello in partnership with the UNHCR? FindHello app is now officially available in Google Play and the iOS App Store.

Live speed painting

Finally, we are going to have a young immigrant speed painting artist do his magic. Delphin Starr is going to put on a live speed painting performance for us. The paintings are going to be part of the auction and all proceeds go towards helping the RCO sustain its mission of helping immigrants and refugees build new lives in the United States.
